In 2021, it was estimated some 20 percent of drug purchases in Ireland were being arranged through social media. In the US in 2018 and Spain in 2019, a tenth of young people who used drugs appear to have connected with dealers through the internet, with the large majority doing so through social media, according to one small study. Only four Russian-language DNMs left the approximately 20-strong ecosystem in 2024. The departure of market leaders such as Solaris Market — which ceased operations in autumn 2024 — is a rare occurrence.
To find out, our recent study surveyed 13 darknet drug vendors, via online encrypted interviews. Opponents of strict dark web policing sometimes argue that such operations drive criminal activity to even more hidden or encrypted platforms, making detection harder. They may also raise privacy and surveillance concerns, warning that aggressive cyber policies risk collateral impacts on online freedom and legitimate users of anonymity technologies.
